Training

Start

When you first begin teaching your dog to sit it is best to do it in a distraction free zone. Other people, dogs, smells etc. are all distractions.

Bottoms Down

Stand in front of your dog and be sure you have their attention, if you have a tasty treat you probably will. If you don't get the treat in your hand and close your hand. This way he can't snatch the treat. Then slowly move the treat over their nose to the head. As he is sniffing something delicious and begins lifting his head, he will naturally sit. As soon as he sits give him his treat and repeat.

After some practice your dog will begin to sit when you get the treat in your hand.  As soon as he does reward. Couple the word ''Sit'' with his action of sitting. Practice, Practice, Practice. It's really that simple, but does take practice. Don't be discourage if it takes your dog awhile to master, every dog is different and some will take longer than others.

TIPS: DO

  • DO make sure to reward the sitting, as time goes on you will be able to lessen this. Eventually your dog will sit even without the lure of a treat.
  • DO have patience as your dog learns what the sit command means.

TIPS: DON'T

  • DON'T hold the treat to far away or go to far past his head as they may jump for it or begin backing up.
  • DON'T push your dog down to sit. This could not only frighten and confuse your dog but physically harm him. Especially smaller dogs, older dogs, dogs with health issues (particularly with the hips) and puppies because they are much more delicate and you could easily injure your dog inadvertently

Keep Sitting

Work with your dog on a regular basis and everywhere. You don't have to wait for a ''training session'' to continue training, do it throughout the day, get others in your household involved as well. The sit command really is an essential manor for your dog to learn.
